PPP smells foul play in petroleum policy

ISLAMABAD, April 22: Pakistan People’s Party on Sunday expressed concern over what it called yet another scandal brewing this time in the petroleum sector and demanded thorough probe.

“A new scandal is brewing in the petroleum sector by opening doors to a few favoured exploration companies to reap windfall gains at the expense of consumers and national exchequer,” spokesperson of the PPP former Senator Farhatullah Babar said in a statement.

The petroleum policy 2007 announced last week by the regime is silent on the critical issue whether new gas price will be allowed only to the companies making new discoveries or it will also be extended to the old companies that are already producing gas.

He said that it was a normal practice to purchase gas at a higher price from companies making new discoveries but the higher price was not allowed to old companies that had already signed the contracts and selling gas at the agreed price.
