Headingley fancied to capture Midas Cup

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, April 21: Three-year-old colt, Headingley, looks poised to win the Midas Cup to be gone over 1300m during the 34th Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse when the first day/night race meeting gets underway on Sunday.

With the weather turning hot and making difficult to hold races during sunshine, the Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards have decided to hold day/night equine events henceforth.

The colt from Bletch Dancer-out-of-Dandy Again, Headingley, is in a good form with three victories and as many places under his belt during the on-going season which makes him the first choice of the six contestants. Among his rivals, Wendy Trace and Discovery are prominent in the event meant for class IV division I & II horses. This will be the fourth race of the day.

In the fifth and supporting event, the Midas Plate class IV division 111 to be contested over 1300m, there are seven runners barring last-minute withdrawals. Of them Javed Khalid's filly Lovely Gate is fancied to pick up the spoils. The filly from Baker's Gate out-of-Love Cham, Lovely Gate was beaten by Prince Of Bhakkar on April 15 and is now is strong contender to make amends this time in the fifth race.

Shim Jim and Run And Win looks good in the third race. The filly Shim Jim has had to her credit a facile victory in her last outing and will be going all out to make it two in-a-row.

Mr Javed Khalid 's three-year-old filly, Honey Gal, who was beaten in her previous outing should make amends and win the race this time. She is contesting in the second race Daisy Against All, Safe And Sound and Bahar-e-Bhakkar may fight for less remunerative positions.

Four-year-old colt, Zoaq seems a good proposition in the first race. Zoaq was defeated by Handsome Hope Sunday last on his first try out. He should produce an improved performance on Sunday.

A card of five events will be seen though. The first race will be contested over 900m, two each over 1100m and 1300m. The first race will be held at 5pm.
