Torch-bearing protest in support of Chief Justice


ISLAMABAD, April 17: Residents of Islamabad on Tuesday staged a torch-bearing protest in front of the Supreme Court building to express solidarity with Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and the families of missing persons, who were allegedly kidnapped by the country’s secret agencies.

The protesters were holding candles, lanterns and placards inscribed with “Chief Justice needs justice for the recovery of missing persons,” “Assault on Chief Justice is assault on judiciary,” “We will not tolerate this attack on our judiciary,, and were chanting slogans such as, “War will continue till the independence of judiciary,” “War will continue till the restoration of (the) Constitution, for an end to martial law, an end to dictatorship,” and “Go Musharraf Go.”

In addition to lawyers, including counsels of the Chief Justice in the Supreme Judicial Council, Munir A Malik, Ali Muhammad Kurd, Justice (retired) Tariq Mehmood, Hafiz Abdul Rehman Ansari, the a number of representatives of the civil society organizations, PPP women’s wing and families of missing person participated in protest.

Speaking at the protest, Ali Ahmed Kurd alleged that all missing persons were with the country’s secret agencies and assured full support of the lawyers’ community to their families.

He demanded that all missing persons be safely returned to their homes otherwise, he warned, the movement would reach its logical end. Mr Malik alleged that all missing persons were being detained unlawfully.

Hafiz Abdul Rehman Ansari, ex-president of the Lahore High Court Bar Association, assured support to the missing persons’ families on behalf of the lawyers of Lahore and alleged that the Chief Justice was punished for taking notice of these missing persons.—PPI
