Khaleda’s second son held

DHAKA: Security forces in Bangladesh detained another son of former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia from her home in Dhaka on Monday, television channels reported. Khaleda’s elder son and apparent political heir Tareque Rahman was arrested last month, which the country’s army-backed interim government said was part of a crackdown on corruption. Her second son Arafat Rahman was arrested by army-led joint forces in a pre-dawn swoop, the TV channels said. No details were given, and government officials were not immediately available for comment.

Arafat, a businessman, was not involved in politics. Khaleda herself has been under a virtual confinement at her home for over a week now. Over 160 senior politicians have been arrested on charges of graft and abuse power since the government imposed a state of emergency on Jan 11, and postponed an election scheduled for Jan 22, in the wake of widespread political violence.—Reuters
