Railways regain women’s hockey gold after 12 years

KARACHI, April 14: Pakistan Railways regained the women's hockey gold in the National Games when they beat defending champion Wapda 3-0 on penalty stroke at Hockey Club of Pakistan Stadium on Saturday.

Match ended in goal-less draw in the regulation time. Wapda, who also holds the National Championship crown, were favourites to win the final following their five successive wins in league rounds, including 2-0 win over Railways on Friday.

But Railways turned the tables on them mainly due to their star performer, goalkeeper Saman Rasheed who put up brilliant display under the cage, blocking Wapda’s repeated attacks with fine anticipation.

Later, during the shoot-out session, Railways scored through Sadia, Samreen and Hina while Saman saved all the attempts from Wapda.

TAEKWONDO: Showing better technique, Pakistan Army won the taekwondo event at Women's Sports Complex Gulshan-e-Iqbal.

Pakistan Railways and Wapda enjoyed the upper hand in men's competition with three gold medals each. Railways also added three silver medals to prove their domination in the men’s event.

It was, however, four golds in women’s event by Pakistan Army which gave them top position. Railways won their men’s gold medals through Sajjad Ahmed (flyweight), Usman Abid (featherweight) Mujahid Hussain (middleweight).

Wapda’s gold medals came through Fahim Jawead Butt (flyweight), Kashif Khan (bantam weight) and Akhtar Hussain (heavyweight). Arif Mehmood won Army's lone men’s gold in the welterweight contest.

In the women’s contest medals went to Kiran Bano (fine weight), Asma Imdad (bantam weight), Naseem Fatiam (feather weight) and Maryam Asghar (light weight). Wapda took the other gold at stake in flyweight division when Samia Naz beat Mehr-u-Nisa of Railways.

SQUASH: Star-studded Wapda earned a gold medal in the men's team squash tournament when they blanked fancied Army 2-0 in the final.

Aamir Atlas drew first blood for the winners when he thrashed Army's Wasim Shad 9-1, 9-5, 9-0.

Yasir Butt confirmed the gold medal after marking stunning victory over Shamsul Islam of 9-0, 9-4, 9-7.

Meanwhile, Airforce clinched the bronze medal after defeating Punjab 2-1 with Safeerullah and talented Waqar Mehboob winning their respective matches.

Sindh NWFP and HEC secured fifth, sixth and seventh positions respectively. —Agencies
