KARACHI: ‘Attack on judiciary boomeranged’

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, April 13: Speakers at a demonstration on Friday said the illegal and unconstitutional attack on judiciary has boomeranged and now the rulers were unable to find a safe place for themselves.

They were speaking at the protest demo organised by the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal on the M. A. Jinnah Road to express solidarity with suspended chief justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry.

Holding banners inscribed with their demands, the participants chanted slogans against the military government.

The leaders said the government had thought that people would soon lose interest in the demos being held in support of Justice Chaudhry but their participation in large numbers had proved that they were ready to struggle till reinstatement of chief justice.

They said all people had shown exemplary patience in all the demonstrations that had been held in support of the chief justice but the government had lost its nerve and had resorted to violence by attacking the lawyers, common people and even media houses.

They said the big turnout in these rally showed that people supported the chief justice and opposed the military ruler. They said people would continue to participate in the rallies even if the hearing of Justice Chaudhry’s reference were held on a daily basis.

The speakers also condemned the government for committing atrocities in Balochistan and Waziristan and demanded that the operation being carried out in these areas be stopped immediately and dialogue be initiated. They urged the masses to forge unity and launch a joint struggle to restore true democracy in the country where military did not interfere in civilian affairs.

They also condemned the government for demolishing five mosques in Islamabad and said now conspiracies were being hatched to demolish Lal Masjid.

Condemning the MQM for holding a rally in support of the military rulers, they said why the party did not hold rallies when the USA had attacked Iraq, Afghanistan or when the chief justice was suspended, lawyers were attacked and media offices were raided.

They said the government and its coalition partners were patronizing extortionists. This way Karachiites had been exposed to extortionists and terrorists, they said adding that the MQM by talking against the Shariah was trying to please its military and western masters.

Professor Ghafoor Ahmad of Jamaat-i-Islami; Sidiq Rathore of MMA; Dr Mairaj-ul-Huda Siddiqui; Allama Nazir Abbas Taqvi of Islami Tehreek; Aslam Ghauri of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam; Shabbir Abu Talib of Jamiat Ulema-i-Pakistan; Mohammad Hussain Mehnti; Laiq Khan; Hameedullah Khan; Yunus Barai; Umer Sadiq; Abdul Waheed Khan; Rafiq Khan and others also spoke.
