Irfan, Sadaf run away with sprint golds: Humera sets new record in pole vault

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, April 10: Pakistan Army’s Mohammad Imran and Sadaf Siddique were crowned ‘Fastest Man’ and ‘Fastest Woman’ of the 30th National Games while Humera Akmal (Army) set a new pole vault mark on the opening day of track and field events at the tartan track of PSB Coaching Centre on Tuesday.

Imran, 24, clocked 10.9 seconds to avenge his defeat he suffered at the hands of team-mate Mohammad Shahbaz in the last national championship at the same venue a year back.

Shahbaz secured the silver while the bronze went to Wapda’s Mohammad Shahbaz.

This was Imran’s sixth triumph in the short sprint at the national level starting with national athletic meet at Rawalpindi in 2003. He is the silver medallist of 200m and bronze medallist in 4x100m relay at the Islamabad South Asian Games in addition to winning bronze in 200m at the SA Games in Colombo and silver in 4x100m relay.

Sadaf Siddique beat Wapda’s Javeria Hassan in a photo-finish to land gold for Army which she is representing for the first time. The two athletes timed 12.1. Nadia Nazir of Wapda earned the bronze.

“I have trained hard and was confident to return with flying colours,” a jubilant Sadaf told Dawn after she won the sprint queen title.

She has been to Iran in Women’s Games in addition to representing the country in the last two SA Games.

Continuing from where she has left, Humera Akmal created a new National Record when she cleared a height of 2.75 metres to eclipse her own mark of 2.40 set by her in the last national’s at the same venue.

The soldiers dominated the men and women track and field events capturing seven of the 10 gold medals that were decided on the opening day. Wapda annexed the remaining three.

Reigning national champion, Noshad Khan of Army maintained his supremacy when he clinched 10000m race in 32:19.01. Though he won he could not better his timings of national championship (32:03.06).

Ilyas, also of Army, bagged the silver while Gulshan Masif of Wapda took the bronze.

10000m women’s event rescheduled

The 10000m women’s race which was scheduled to take place at 11am on Tuesday has been deferred for Wednesday by the organisers due to hot weather conditions.

“It has been rescheduled for Wednesday at 8.30am as the weather will be good in morning,” an official of the Athletics Federation of Pakistan (AFP) told Dawn.

The rescheduling was done after Dawn had pointed out that it was not appropriate to conduct the long distance women race under scorching heat.
