Army, Wapda set to dominate athletics meet today


KARACHI, April 9: The supremacy of Army and Wapda on the track and field in the 30th National Games will again be on display with the commencement of athletic meet on Tuesday.

Over the years, the soldiers have dominated the country’s athletics by producing athletes of high calibre. However, Wapda have challenged their ascendancy in the recent past.

The soldiers, in all, amassed 22 golds, 25 silvers and 14 bronzes to win the overall athletics trophy in the last games at Quetta in 2004.

Wapda, on the other hand, finished a closed second, securing 19 golds, 12 silvers and 17 bronzes. Wapda though finished overall runners up, their women athletes succeeded in lowering the colours of Army. Wapda women bagged 11-7-10 medals as compared to 8-9-6 annexed by Army.

Railways finished overall third with one gold, five silvers and eight bronzes.

Four finals – three of women’s and one of men, are on card in the morning session. They are pole vault, javelin throw and 10,000m (women) and hammer throw (men).

The afternoon session will witness seven finals – shot put, high jump, 800m, 100m, (women), 100m, javelin throw and 10,000m (men).

The men’s and women’s track and field events are being held jointly by the organisers.

Badminton

Top seed Wapda, second seed Railways, hosts Sindh and Punjab propelled in the men’s team event semi-finals of 30th National Games badminton event at the PSB Coaching Centre on Monday.

Wapda assisted by Pakistan No 1 Wajid Ali and No 2 Zeeshan, edged past HEC 3-0, Railways whipped Army 3-1, Sindh outclassed NWFP 3-1 while Punjab got the better of Balochistan 3-0.

Sindh takes on Punjab while Wapda is drawn to meet Railways in the two pre-finals on Tuesday.

The women’s team events quarter-finals are being played on Monday night at the time of filing this report.

Table Tennis

Top seed Wapda, Punjab, Sindh and HEC conjured up two wins apiece in the men’s team event of the games table tennis competition which commenced at Islamia Club on Monday.
