Opposition trying to influence SJC verdict: Full support to lawyers: Pervaiz
LAHORE, April 9: The opposition parties are trying to influence the verdict of the Supreme Judicial Council through a “failed attempt” to use the lawyers’ community as a tool, says Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi.
Addressing a convention held at Alhamra Hall here under the aegis of ‘PML lawyers wing’ on Monday, the chief minister said the ruling party on the other hand believed in the supremacy of constitution, respect for the judiciary and the rule of law.
The convention, according to a handout, was attended by district and tehsil level office bearers of PML lawyers wing from across the province.
Pervaiz Elahi said the PML would not allow manhandling of the lawyers supporting the government. He said there was a need to brace for a legal struggle against those involved in stigmatizing the profession of lawyers.
He said his government would extend all support to strengthen the lawyers community at every level.
Regarding the cancellation of membership, Elahi said no bar council had the right to cancel the membership of any lawyer who did not support it.
Referring to the manhandling of senior lawyers in Islamabad by opposition lawyers, Pervaiz Elahi said that it had brought bad name to the legal profession.
The chief minister also condemned the manhandling of Dr Khalid Ranjha.
He said that the government had taken effective measures for the welfare of the lawyers at tehsil, district, high court and Supreme Court bar levels, besides providing huge amounts for different development projects.
He said the participation of a big number of lawyers in the convention had negated the unfounded perceptions about the lawyers’ community.
The chief minister asked the ministers and members of national and provincial assemblies to consult lawyers for the resolution of their problems.
RESOLUTIONS: The lawyers convention unanimously passed six resolutions.
Advocate Islamullah Warraich, Sadique Baloch, Soihaila, Ahmad Raza Bokhari and Zulfiqar Ali Sandhu moved the resolutions.
The resolutions fully endorsed the constitutional procedure adopted by President Musharraf on filing the the reference against the chief justice.
The resolutions reposed full confidence in the Supreme Judicial Council and said the lawyers would accept its verdict in letter and spirit.
“The convention also describes the procession, demonstrations and rallies in this regard as attempts to affect the judicial body. The participants are of the view that such activities should be discouraged to ensure justice,” the resolutions said.
One resolution condemned the act of suspending bar’s membership and cancellation of licences on the basis of difference of opinion and contended that these steps were not in consonant with any rules and regulations.
“This convention terms unfortunate the tendency of intolerance on difference of opinion among the lawyers community.” —APP
