KARACHI: Unsafe syringes to blame: Hepatitis risk

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, April 5: The biggest risk factor behind the increased hepatitis C infection in Pakistan was unsafe injection practice, said Dr Adeel Butt of the University of Pittsburgh, USA.

He was delivering a lecture on the management of hepatitis C at the Dow University of Health Sciences on Thursday under the organisation of Sarwar Zuberi Liver Centre. Dr Butt talked about new developments in the treatment patterns for Hepatitis C.

According to him, six per cent Pakistanis may be infected with Hepatitis C. He said that 50 to 80 per cent of hepatitis C patients were curable but most of the patients did not initiate or complete treatment.
