ISLAMABAD, April 4: The Supreme Court on Wednesday indicted senior administration and police officials of Islamabad for committing contempt of court by roughing up “non-functional” Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry to prevent him from going on foot to the apex court to appear before the Supreme Judicial Council.
“On March 13, you by grossly manhandling Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry and by acts of omission and commission brought into disrepute and ridiculed the authority of this court and grossly interfered with the course of administration of justice by acting in a highly contemptuous and disrespectful manner to the honourable Justice,” says the charge read out to the officers for committing contempt of court.
A three-member bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Rana Bhagwandas, Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani and Justice Nasirul Mulk has taken up the inquiry report of Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan of the Peshawar High Court on manhandling of the suspended chief justice.
The seven officers facing the charges under section 4 of the Contempt of Court Act, 1976, read with Article 204 of the Constitution are Islamabad Chief Commissioner Khalid Pervaiz, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ali, Inspector General of Police Chaudhry Iftikhar Ahmad, Senior Superintendent of Police Zafar Iqbal, Deputy Superintendent of Police Jamil Hashmi, Secretariat Police Station SHO Rukhsar Mehdi and Siraj Ahmad, assistant sub-inspector/security guard of t he IGP.
They are required to submit their replies before the court by April 11.
