KARACHI: Seminar seeks free press, judiciary

By A Reporter

KARACHI, April 3: A seminar titled ‘Role of lawyers, media and scholars in independent judiciary’ was held at the KBA’s Shuhda-i-Punjab Hall on Monday night.

Former SHC Chief Justice Nasir Aslam Zahid, members of Pakistan Bar Council Yaseen Azad, Abul Inaam, Vice Chairman Sindh Bar Couoncil Mohammad Amin Lakhani, members SBC Zia Ahmed Awan, Noor Naz Agha, KBA President Iftikhar Javaid Qazi, General Secretary Naeem Qureshi, President Karachi Press Club Sabihuddin Ghausi, General Secretary Imtiaz Faran, and Sajjad Mir spoke.

Nasir Aslam Zahid said the Supreme Judicial Council was not a court that could take a decision against anyone, but a fact finding body. He said that SJC would complete its inquiry and submit a report to the prime minister for action.

He said the action taken against the CJP was unconstitutional, adding that the legislature and executive were not playing their role to solve the peoples’ problems. In such a situation, the judiciary was bound to play its role. He said judiciary must be independent to provide justice to the needy people.

The speakers deliberated on the role of the judiciary, executive, legislature and the current issues. They also referred to incidents of violence, injustices and said that for provision of easy justice to the people, an independent judiciary’s role could not be ignored.

They also highlighted the media’s role and said the rulers had always tried to suppress the freedom of the Press. The Press they said had never been cowed by these steps.
