KARACHI, April 3: The quick reaction and bravery of a constable led to the arrest of two robbers on Tuesday in Mauripur. Constable Ghulam Farid, who was posted at a nearby bank, injured one of the three dacoits during the shootout. Eyewitnesses said the constable and the people present overpowered two dacoits, while the third one escaped.

The witnesses said the bandits reached the first-floor office of M. R. Enterprises at a two storey-building. They said two of them entered the office and their third accomplice took position on the stairs, who opened fire at the constable when he attempted to climb the stairs. They said the constable ducked down and returned the fire hitting the dacoit.

Keamari Town Police Officer Javed Mehar said the constable would be rewarded accordingly for showing an unusual deed of valour.

SHO Maripur Inspector Pervez Bangash said Ghulam Farid was posted on guard duty at nearby Faisal Bank. He said he was approached by one of the staff members of the good transport forwarding agency, who was outside his office and smelt a rat.

He said owner of the goods transport company, Malik Liaquat, and one of his employees, Imran, sustained minor injuries as the glass door of the office was smashed during struggle of employees with intruders.

He said one of the dacoits was shot at and injured by the constable while the other suspect received wounds when angry people beat him. He said two pistols were seized from both dacoits who went unconscious.

The injured dacoits were shifted to the Civil Hospital, where sources said their condition was improving.

Meanwhile, the Anti-Dacoity and Robbery Cell arrested a mastermind of street criminals and a ringleader of dacoits’ gang after a shootout.

Officials said ADRC chief SSP Sanaullah Abbasi had formed a raiding party under the supervision of DSP Asghar Dahri for the arrest of the gang. They said the party raided at Kala Pul area and arrested Zaheer Ahmed Jamali and Muhamad Rauf after a shootout. ADRC police seized 30 cellphones and two motorbikes snatched by the bandits. Besides, two TT pistols were also recovered from their possession.
