KARACHI, April 2: Death of a prayer caller in a road accident spread violence in Banaras causing worst traffic jams on Manghopir Road, Shahrah-i-Orangi and Abdullah College Road on Monday.
Umer Farooq s/o Misal Khan, was on a motorcycle (KBF 2204) when it was hit by a bus of UTS route No 37. He died on the spot. Following the accident, area people gathered there and smashed window panes of the bus. They also damaged its seats and body. However, with the intervention of area elders the mob dispersed and the bus (JB 2501) was not set on fire.
The bus parked in middle of Banaras intersection left hundreds of commuters on link roads stranded for at least two hours.
A few traffic personnel were trying to regulate the traffic, but in vain. The traffic coming from Abdullah College side was diverted to a road leading to Qasba Colony Road, but long vehicles could not follow the route.
Traffic also remained blocked in front of Metro Cinema where the traffic police were not available.
However, women, elderly people and children were the worst sufferers. Ambulances were also trapped in the traffic. Motorcyclists and rickshaw drivers in their effort to make way out aggravated the situation further.
Traffic remained blocked for hours until the police shifted the damaged bus to Peerabad police station.
