Call to end political influence in local govt system
ISLAMABAD, Dec 23: National Reconstruction Bureau (NRB) Chairman Daniyal Aziz has underlined the need for eliminating political influence in the local government system.
Today several parliamentarians are using their power to carry out recruitment and promotion in different departments, including education, Mr Aziz said while speaking at a seminar held at a local hotel on Saturday.
The seminar, which was held to review the implementation of the newly-introduced reforms in various departments, was organised by the National Reconstruction Bureau (NRB) and United Nations Development Project (UNDP).
Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) President Raja Zulqarnain and National Commission for Government Reforms Chairman Dr Ishrat Hussain as well as other delegates spoke on the occasion.
“We can achieve the target of good governance by ensuring implementation of reforms, as the NRB has complete informative data of local governments, Daniyal Aziz said.
He said various ministries and departments were introducing e-governance in the country by launching websites.
The NRB, according to geographic information system, has collected complete data about assets, buildings and other necessary information of union councils and district governments, he added.
Rules and regulations for deputing bureaucrats at the local bodies level would be changed and the district management system introduced, Mr Aziz said.
The NRB chairman further noted that members of the provincial and national assemblies were using powers to promote and recruit teachers, and this should end.
Daniyal Aziz appreciated the efforts of the UNDP in introducing reforms in different departments with the collaboration of the NRB.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief of the UNDP in Pakistan appreciated the local bodies system in the country. He stressed on the need to include citizens of the country in decision-making process in order to achieve the target of good governance and real democracy. He emphasised the need to introduce reforms in education, health and police departments on immediate basis. He said the UNDP would continue its assistance in future to complete the agenda of reconstruction.
During the seminar, delegates throughout the world presented their point of view on the implementation on the newly-introduced NRB reforms in various departments.—Online
