PESHAWAR: Divine intervention sought

By Ashfaq Yusufzai

PESHAWAR, Dec 23: After failing to get from the Wapda what it believes is its rightful share in the net profits from power generation proceeds, the NWFP cabinet on Saturday decided to seek divine intervention over the issue.

The cabinet, which met here under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani, appealed to the people to offer Salat-i-Hajat prayers and to hold Quran Khwani in madressahs and mosques, enabling the province to get its share in the net hydel profits from the Wapda.

The unusual decision comes in the wake of a unanimous decision by an arbitration commission appointed by the federal government on Oct 9, obliging the Wapda to make a net payment of Rs110.4 billion to the NWFP within five years.

The Wapda, however, has expressed reservations over the decision and said it would not be able to pay the dues in the wake of its own financial woes. The federal government, under the 1973 Constitution, is a guarantor in the case.

However, the issue has been lingering on, owing to a dispute over the interpretation of the A.G.N. Qazi formula, under which the NWFP’s share has already been computed. The NWFP cabinet decided that, besides seeking divine intervention, it would take up the matter in the Supreme Court.
