Double honours for trio in Lahore race

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Dec 17: Jockeys Aamir Pervez and Salahuddin and trainer Haji Fazal Hadi won the racing honours during the 17th Lahore Winter Meeting registering a double each at the Racecourse on Sunday.

Aamir rode home Viena Coup and Zanjeer in the second and fifth race while Salahuddin partnered Lovely Gate and Kind Minister in the third and seventh race, respectively.

The ex-champion trainer Haji Fazal Hadi sent out Viena Coup and Lovely Gate, owned jointly by Masood Pervez and Javed Khalid who excelled among owners.

The feature event, the Gojra Plate class IV division I contested over 1300m, was won by chestnut colt, Nosha, who beat Baker's Gal by over a length in a record fastest timing over the distance.

Favourite Tuman Khan finished fourth behind Golden Goal. The winner clocked one minute 18 2/5 secs, a fraction of the second less by the existing record set up by Baker's Gal.

Nosha was steered by riding boy Shahid Mustafa, who had earlier brought in Princess of Gujrat in the fourth race.

Sunday's card proved punter-friendly when six favourites romped home in a card of seven events. The favourite-backers started the day on a triumphant note when odds-on favourite filly, Shim Jim won the opener defeating Redouble by two lengths.

Later, Viena Coup, Lovely Gate, Princess Gujrat and Zanjeer, the other favourites followed her in the second, third, and fourth races. The three to one chance Nosha, won the sixth race but was again followed by favourite Kind Minister in the seventh and last race of the day.

The next Lahore Gymkhana races will be held on Wednesday.
