SANGHAR, Nov 19: Faced with acute shortage of sugarcane, Sanghar Sugar Mills, the district’s only sugar mill, is pestering farmers and offering them different incentives to harvest their crop and transport it to the mills.

The mills’ field staff is offering transport and prompt payment but still they are getting just 35,000 to 40,000 maunds against the mills’ total crushing capacity of 140,000 maunds a day.The farmers gave several reasons for the short supply and delay in harvesting, the major factor being the unavailability of labour force.

They said that the labour came from Thar who would this year come after harvesting their own rain-fed crops.
