Umar Gul sends ZTBL reeling

KARACHI, Nov 3: Pakistan’s young fast bowler Umar Gul, continuing with his impressive form in the recent ICC Champions Trophy in India, reduced the Zarai Tarraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) to 58 for 5 in their first innings after Habib Bank were bowled out for a paltry 169 on the opening day of their four-day Patron’s Trophy tie here at the UBL Ground on Friday.

On an eventful day which saw all the sixteen wickets falling to fast bowlers on a grassy strip, the strong Habib Bank line-up folded to pacers Kashif Dawood (5 for 46) and Mohammad Khalil (3 for 54) and Rao Iftikhar (2 for 32) after being put into bat by the opposition.

Only Taufeeq Umar (32) and Humanyun Farhat (40) managed to hold their own against the pace trio who got rid of big names such as Imran Farhat (4), Younis Khan (15), Asim Kamal (13), Shahid Afridi (1) and Azhar Mahmood (0). Wicketkeeper Adnan Akmal, the younger brother of Test custodian Kamran, took five catches in an impressive display behind the stumps.

Umar Gul, however, turned the tables on ZTBL with a hostile spell of fast bowling, capturing 4 for 50 and reducing the rival team to 58 for 5 in their first innings at the stumps.

Summarised Scores: HBL 1st innings 169 (Humanyun Farhat 40, Taufeeq Umar 32; Kashif Dawood 5 for 46); ZTBL 1st innings 58 for 5 (Umar Gul 4 for 50).—Agencies
