KARACHI: LJ men deny charges in Suparco case


KARACHI, Oct 14: Lashkar-i-Jhangvi activists on Saturday denied prosecution charges of murdering and injuring employees of Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Organization (Suparco) in an attack on its bus in October 2003.

Recording statements before an ATC in Karachi under 342 CrPC Shahnawaz alias Shani and Mohammad Shaukat, who are charged with attacking on Suparco bus with automatic weapons, carrying employees of for Friday prayers, at Hub River Road, Mauripur area, said they had nothing to do with offence and police falsely implicated them in case. Six people were killed while seven were injured in this attack.

ATC Judge Feroz Mehmood Bhatti, after recording the statement of the accused, fixed Oct 21 for hearing closing arguments.

KIDNAPPING CASE: Judge Feroz Mehmood Bhatti of the ATC-II on Saturday recorded deposition in case of alleged kidnapping for ransom and murder of baby Laiba.

ATC-II Judge recorded the statement of SI Taimuria, Tafakkar, who had registered FIR of the case.

A two-and-a-half-year-old girl, Laiba, was allegedly kidnapped for ransom and subsequently murdered in the limits of North Nazimabad by her uncle, namely Asadullah.

She went missing on April 28, while kidnappers demanded a ransom amounting Rs1.5 million from the family. After negotiations, the family paid Rs300,000.

The family went to the spot, but they found a-day-old body of Laiba bearing torture marks.

Asadullah was arrested on charge of kidnapping and torturing her to death in the jurisdiction of the North Nazimabad. The court has adjourned the proceedings till Oct 19.

SP SUMMONED: An anti-terrorism court in Karachi on Saturday directed the SP Peshawar to appear before the court on Oct 18 for deposition in a kidnapping for ransom case of a bank employee, namely Hamid Umer.

Hamid Umer was allegedly kidnapped on Sept 20, 2005, from Clifton area by Qazi Haneefullah, Qazi Farhanullah and Sikandar Shah, who denied charges and pleaded not guilty.

The prosecution alleged that the kidnappers took the abductee to Peshawar and used his ATM card to withdraw an amount of Rs 20,500 from his bank account and subsequently released him.—PPI/APP
