KOHAT, July 26: The police have failed to make any headway in resolving the case of kidnapping of a factory owner who has been missing for 35 days despite payment of ransom by his family, it has been learnt.
Relatives of the victim, Qaleem Paracha, told Dawn that police were afraid of taking action against an influential group of criminals involved in the kidnapping.
They alleged that police had tried to misguide them for 15 days by asking them to accept an unclaimed body found near Lachi town as that of Mr Paracha. The body was later identified as that of another kidnapped man.
Meanwhile, Mr Paracha called his uncle and told him that he had been sold to a third party and his family should pay the ransom without any delay. The ransom was paid to the kidnapers through a man who promised that Mr Paracha would reach home within 12 hours.
But the family again received a message for payment of Rs300,000 more through another person.
A police official claimed: “We are dealing with a non-professional gang of kidnappers which is scared after the arrest of one of its members and identification of the vehicle used in the kidnapping. The family members of the victim have got released the man and the vehicle on the instructions of the kidnappers.”
He said the kidnappers wanted assurance that police would not take action against them after the release of Mr Paracha.
But the victim’s relatives said that police had at one stage expressed inability to recover the kidnapped man and asked them to sort out the matter through a deal with the kidnappers.
