MUZAFFARABAD, July 23: The Jammu Kashmir People’s Muslim League (JK PML) convener Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry has served a showcause notice on a newly-elected lawmaker of his party for allegedly voting for the majority Muslim Conference party in Saturday’s elections for eight reserved seats of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.
Chaudhry Anwaarul Haq, MLA-elect from LA 7, Bhimber III, was asked to show cause within two weeks why did he violate the party policy and why proceeding should not be initiated against him by the party for his disqualification from being an MLA under the relevant provisions of the Political Parties Act, PML sources told Dawn here on Sunday.
Mr Haq had defeated Chaudhry Tariq Farooq, MC candidate and works minister in the outgoing government, with the help of Raja Zulqarnain Khan, who is believed to be the MC’s candidate in the upcoming presidential elections.
However, shortly after the election he had given indication of his inclination towards the ruling party, provoking the ire of Mr Farooq.
PML sources said that their leader had also suspended the basic party membership of Haq for two weeks.
