KARACHI, April 27: At least four persons have been picked up in different parts of the city in an early morning raid in Abbas Town in Gulshan-i-Iqbal and Mehmoodabad reportedly by the intelligence agencies.
Eyewitnesses told Dawn that about vehicles with tinted glasses and mobiles bearing no registration numbers came to Abbas Town and took away Mohammad Ali, an estate agent and Hasan, a dispenser. People said several dozen armed men in civvies surrounded several houses and nabbed the youth.
In a simultaneous raid, Nayyer Zaidi and Nasir Husain were picked up from Mehmoodabad and Soldier Bazaar respectively by armed men in civvies Tuesday morning. Nayyer Zaidi is a central leader of the Pasban-i-Aza.
Condemning the raids, Sindh chief of the Tehreek-i-Islami, Allama Hasan Turabi, told Dawn that since the Nishtar Park tragedy, around 50 to 60 youth have been arrested from different parts of the city.
He condemned the uncalled for detentions, saying the families of the victims have searched almost all police stations, but failed to find whereabouts of their family members.
He said al least families should be informed the whereabouts of their family members.
Allama Turabi expressed his apprehensions over attempts to implicate Mohammad Husain Balti in the Nishtar Park tragedy, questioning the professional expertise of the intelligence agencies probing the case.
PICKED UP: An activist of Hizbul Tahrir was picked up in an early morning raid at his house in Gulshan-i-Iqbal on Thursday.
According to a statement issued by Hizb, Shahid Shaikh, 57, an active member of Hizbul Tahrir was forciblytaken away by the agencies. They also took away his car with them while taking Mr Shaikh with them
the statement said.
Quoting eyewitnesses, the statement said that the government sleuths came on two vehicles of the Madadgar to carry out the raid. His friends and family members have not yet traced him, the statement added.
