KARACHI, April 26: The Naib Nazim, Nasreen Jalil, has said that historical buildings of Karachi were the city’s pride and identification, adding that it was society’s collective responsibility to preserve them.

Talking to a delegation of 100 students of the Workers Model School, Korangi Campus, who were on a visit to the defunct KMC Building on Wednesday, she said that Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah had visited the building on August 25, 1947.

”We wish that the country's most important personalities should come and visit the building,” she said, adding that President Pervez Musharraf would also be requested to come here so people can get more and more knowledge about the heritage building.

The students had come to visit the defunct KMC building on an invitation of the naib nazim.

The students went round the building and planted a variety of plants within its boundary.

Presiding Officer, Ahsan Ahmed Siddiqui, Chairperson of Welfare Committee Sarwat Arif, Niaz Ahmed, renowned poet Zakia Ghazal and others were present there.

Jalil and the students prayed for the progress and prosperity of the country.

A song written by Zakia Ghazal and composed by Niaz Ahmed was also performed before the visiting students.

The art work of renowned artist Karim Solangi was also put on display on the occasion.

She informed the children that the building’s foundation was laid on December 14, 1895 by the then governor of Bombay. It was completed at a cost of Rs1.775 million in 1930 and was inaugurated in 1932.—APP
