PPP, PML-N defer signing of democracy charter

By Ashraf Mumtaz

LAHORE, April 19: The charter of democracy, being finalised by the PPP and the PML-N these days, is expected to be announced some time next month, say PPP sources.

The document, prepared after months of hard work by a four- member team of the two parties, will be released at a meeting of former prime ministers Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif in London.

Some PML-N leaders had said recently that the exiled leaders would meet on April 22. However, PPP leader Makhdoom Amin Fahim said no meeting was scheduled for April 22.

Another PPP leader in London said Ms Bhutto was arriving in London during the next few days and she would meet Mr Sharif after dealing with other preoccupations. She will preside over a meeting of the AJKPP on April 23.

It’s not clear whether the Sharif-Benazir meeting will be possible on April 22.

He said since the charter of democracy was a comprehensive document, the two leaders would require quite some time to finalise it. Therefore, he said while an informal meeting was likely during the next few days, a formal one would be held in May.
