100 injured in BD clash

By Our Correspondent

DHAKA: Over 100 people were injured, dozens arrested and many vehicles damaged and burnt in fierce clashes between opposition activists and police here on Wednesday during the opposition’s bid to stage a sit-in around the prime minister’s office.

Police lobbed several hundred tear gas shells, opened fire and charged batons to disperse agitators at Bangla Motor, Russel Square and Dhanmondi Road during the agitation sponsored by the Awami League-led 14-pary combine.

Opposition activists fought pitched battles with police in Bangla Motor-Paribagh area and burned a number of vehicles.

As police fired a hail of teargas shells on the unruly demonstrators, the angry demonstrators, demanding reform of the caretaker government for credible national elections, also damaged dozens of cars and some small shops on pavements in Bangla Motor and Eastern Plaza areas.
