KARACHI: City to get 100mgd more water by end of April

KARACHI, April 17: The city will start getting 100 million gallon water additional by the end of this month as the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board has carried out 80 per cent testing of the K-III system.

A KWSB official told Online on Monday that the board had completed all 13 components of K-III system in March, three months ahead of the scheduled deadline.

He said that the testing of pumping stations, conduits, siphons, rising mains and other parts of the components was expected to be completed within next 10 to 15 days.

Six components, including W 1, 2, 3 and WN6-7/A, had already been completed and handed over to the bulk supply department after thorough checking, he maintained.

The KWSB have tested conduits and siphons from Gujjo to Gharo, from Gharo to Dhabeji Pumping Station, and from Dhabeji to High Point. Civil work of Dhabeji and North East Karachi pumping stations had also been completed, he added.

The under testing components are electric work of Dhabeji, and NEK pumping stations, siphons and pipelines from Dursana Chunno to Malir Riverbed and from NEK pumping station to Hub pumping station.

The 100km-long K-III project has been constructed from Keenjhar lake Thatta to Karachi city and from NEK pumping station to Hub city at a cost of Rs5.89 billion.

Out of 100mgd water, 95mgd will be supplied to Karachi and the remaining five million gallon water daily to Hub.

At present, 450mgd water is being supplied to the city from Keenjhar Lake and 50mgd from Hub Dam. The actual water need of the metropolis is 648mgd.

According to KWSB official, the water level of Hub Dam is rapidly decreasing due to meagre rains last year. About eight months ago, 90mgd water was being supplied from Hub Dam to Baldia, Orangi and New Karachi towns, which is reduced to only 50mgd due to the same.

Less supply of water from Hub Dam has created serious water shortage in these areas, however, after commissioning of K-III system, the situation will be improved, as city will get 95mgd additional water, the official said. —Online
