KARACHI: Black day observed in colleges

KARACHI, April 10: College teachers on Monday observed a black day against hooliganism and harassment of their colleagues at Govt. Commerce and Economics College Karachi by activists of a student organization a few days back.

The call for observing black day was given by the Sindh Professors and Lecturers’ Association (SPLA). Lecturers and professors at the city colleges performed their duties by wearing black armbands in protest against the harassment of teachers and hooliganism at colleges and other educational institutes.

Protest meetings were held at many colleges including DJ Sindh Government Science College, Adamjee Science College, Islamia Arts and Commerce College, National College, Premier College and other institutes during which the SPLA members demanded of the government to take steps for the protection of teachers and students.

During the meetings, teachers also urged political parties having student wings to use their influence for protecting teachers and direct student activists not to misbehave manhandle or damage personal and public properties.

Resolutions were also passed on the occasion, demanding of the authorities to arrest culprits involved in harassing teachers and provide compensation to teachers for their losses.

A meeting of the SPLA office-bearers held at the DJ College also expressed its concern over the daily clashes between student groups at colleges and other educational institutes and criticized Sindh Education Minister Dr Hamida Khuhro for her “negligent” attitude.

The meeting observed that it was the responsibility of the home as well as education ministries to ensure law and order at educational institutions but deplored that the education department was not performing its duties and responsibilities properly.

Meanwhile, students belonging to the Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) also observed black day at various colleges and other educational institutions in protest against attacks on their colleagues.—PPI
