SHEIKHUPURA, April 9: Federal Information Minister Sheikh Rashid has said the political career of Benazir Bhutto depends on Swiss court verdict which is likely to be announced before the 2007 election. “If court declares her convict, her role in politics will be finished.”
The minister was talking to a gathering of journalists, MNAs, MPAs and elite of the city at local District Government Complex on the eve of oath-taking ceremony of newly elected office-bearers of Sheikhupura Press Club here on Sunday.
District Nazim Mian Jalil Sharaqpuri, Senator Naeem Husain Chattha, District Naib Nazim Malik Rehmat Ali Dogar, Tehsil Nazim Bilal Virk and others were also present on the occasion.
The federal minister said political leaders in the country, including Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, were the production of uniform. He said all cases against Benazir Bhutto had been filed by Nawaz Sharif and not even a single one was instituted by the present government.
He said if opposition resigned from assemblies, the government would hold election on vacant seats.
On this occasion, the federal minister announced a grant of Rs50,000 for the press club and promised to get released Rs1 million which had already been announced by Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi some time back.
Later, Sheikh Rashid administered oath to new office-bearers of the press club.
They are: president Muhammad Ilyas Gujjar, senior vice-president Tahir Masood Sajid, vice-president Shahbaz Khan, secretary-general Javaid Meraj, joint secretary Malik Munir Khakhar, finance secretary Rana Akram and information secretary Shaukat Ali Naz.
THREE KILLED: Three people were killed while two others suffered serious injuries in an accident on Sheikhupura-Faisalabad Road on Sunday.
Taufiq, Rafaqat, Billa, Khaliq and Javaid were going to Nankana Sahib from Raiwind to attend a marriage ceremony by their car (LHZ- 5830). Near Kharianwala, the speeding car hit the trailer parked along the road. As a result, Taufiq, Rafaqat and Billa died on the spot while two other occupants received injuries. They were shifted to a Lahore hospital in critical condition.
