‘Opportunists using karo-kari custom for influence’

SHIKARPUR, April 8: Former defence minister Aftab Shaban Mirani has said that some opportunists use inhuman customs like karo-kari to keep people under their domination. Presiding over a seminar on “We Can End Karo-kari” the other day, he said the successive Pakistan People’s Party had empowered women by reserving seats for them under the 1973 Constitution establishing the First Women Bank and women police stations. The event was held by Oxfam, an NGO, in collaboration with the Human Rights Education Forum.

Programme Officer Ms Parveen Nawaz Shaikh, who was chief guest, Abdul Khaliq Chandio, Sikandar Ali Brohi, Iqbal Detho, Ms Shahida Memon advocate, Naseer Ahmed Lodhi advocate, Taluka Nazim Zafar Ahmed Shaikh and others also spoke on the occasion.

HUNGER STRIKE: The Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (JSQM) staged a token hunger strike at Lakhi Gate on Friday to press their demand for the release of party general secretary, Safdar Sarki.

Over 30 activists participated in the strike.
