KARACHI: Demolition slammed

Published April 7, 2006

KARACHI, April 6: Political and religious leaders have warned the city government against demolishing mosques and old villages in the city. Speaking at a convention organized by Jamaat-i-Islami on the subject at its office, Idara Noor-i-Haq, here on Thursday, they termed the city government’s drive ‘illegal’ and urged the Supreme Court to take suo motu notice of the action.

The convention was chaired by Sindh MMA chief Asadullah Bhutto.

They also asked the Sindh governor and city government to take action for the removal of the MQM’s party, sector and unit offices from public parks and government offices, instead of demolishing the old villages and mosques.

Through a declaration pass-ed at the convention, the participants vowed to ensure protection to the poor people’s houses and mosques, and resolved that all constitutional and democratic means would be employed for the purpose. —PPI
