Horse-racing: Bang On Target favourite to lift Sprinters Cup

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, April 1: Seven-year-old bay mare, Bang On Target, is poised to lift the Sprinter’s Cup in the Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday. Having won two races on trot including the Pakistan Day Cup, she starts as our days’ best and look to repeat the winning performance to register hat trick.

She is drawn in the sixth race of the programme going over a sprinting distance of five furlongs with a field of 13 aspirants in fray.

Four-year-old filly, Victory Road, who failed to prove her mettle in the Pakistan Derby at Lahore in the recent past, and bay horse, Al Faris, are expected to pose serious challenge to Bang On Target.

A card of eight races with first six going over a distance of five furlongs and the last two to six has been chalked out for the day. The first race begins at 1.00pm.

Drawn in a pack of 10 contestants, Lovely Concept, a nine-year-old bay horse, is fancied to pick up the opener. He should be chased by eight-year-old Ladla and mare First Shot.

Ladla was sprinted to victory beating First Shot by neck in the last Sunday’s meeting.

Five-year-old mare, Princess Ridda, who was forced to withdraw at the starting point in the last outing, should pick up the spoils in the next race. Mare, Sparkling Lady, and bay colt, Fascinate, should settle for places.

If all goes well, three-year-old filly, Eswarah, should come up with flying colours in the third race to make it two in a row. She was piloted home by Fahim K by six and a half length on March 19.

Four-year-old bay colt, Baba Jani, and 11-year-old Kicking King, should follow Eswarah for the places.

If tried by the connections, four-year-old filly, Closing Argument, should cross the finishing line ahead of other opponent’s to grab the fourth event. She has not appeared on the board this year.

Trained by Sher Mohammad, Jaguar, and Mera Jugnoo, are likely to pick up the next two places.

Six-year-old mare, Iztrab, who came out with fluent success on the last two occasions, should make it three in a row by grabbing the fifth race.

Three-year-old bay colt, Laat Sahib, and mare Aie Bahar, both from the stables of Shah Mardan Shah Pir Pagara, are tipped to dominate the last two races.

Following is the field and our selection.
