MIAMI, March 26: Champion Kim Clijsters suffered a shock defeat at the ATP/WTA Open on Saturday when she was ambushed 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 in the second round by unseeded American Jill Craybas. The women’s second seed was joined at the exit by her former fiance Lleyton Hewitt, who was beaten for the first time in nine meetings by Tim Henman. The Briton ended a painful losing streak with a 7-6, 6-3 victory over the men’s 13th seed.
Clijsters showed signs of rust as she played her first match since losing the Antwerp final to the Frenchwoman in February.
Success over Australian Hewitt was sweet for Henman, who finally beat his nemesis for the first time in a rivalry which began on US hardcourts in 2000.
With Hewitt struggling to find his touch, the defeat dropped him to 13-7 for the season.
Henman showed fighting form in the one hour 45 minute victory.
