MELBOURNE, March 21: Mohammad Nisar’s dream of at least securing a bronze medal was shattered when he was beaten by Welshman Nasir Mohammad 30-15 in the light flyweight (48kg) of the Commonwealth Games on Tuesday. A win could have ensured Nisar a bronze but he failed to match the speed and agility of his rival who jolted the Pakistani boxer with a series of blows in the beginning.

Out of five Pakistani boxers Nisar along with Asghar Ali Shah and Meharullah qualified for the quarterfinals.

Asghar and Mehar will be in action on Wednesday and boxing team officials have pinned hopes for securing medals through them.

Wajid, Zeeshan ADVANCE

Pakistan’s Wajid Ali and Zeeshan Umer scored victories in the singles matches to reach the individual badminton pre-quarterfinals.

Wajid turned a possible defeat into victory after the score was tied 20-20 in the third set. He achieved victory against Wales’ James Martyan Lewis by winning the set 22-20.

Earlier, he had won the first set 23-21 but lost the second 17-21.

As Wajid fought a one-hour battle to move to the next round, Zeeshan seemed in a hurry to fold the match in just 18 minutes beating Trinidad and Tobago’s Rahul Rampersad in straight games 21-3, 21-9.

Zeeshan’s supremacy was never in doubt against Trinidad’s player.

The joy was shortlived as the pair was beaten in the doubles of the individual event by the Indian pair of Diju and Anand in straight games 21-12, 21-7.

Pakistan players won three matches — two by men and one by women — in the individual singles table tennis while Asim Qureishi was the only loser on Tuesday.
