LAHORE, March 16: Governor Khalid Maqbool has said the Allama Iqbal Medical College can be considered for granting university status. The governor expressed his view at the inaugural ceremony of a new dialysis centre at the Jinnah Hospital on Thursday.

He said the government had assessed the educational standards of the AIMC and found those at par with international universities.

Punjab Health Minister Dr Tahir Ali Javed said the AIMC’s educational standard had been assessed by foreigners, who declared those at par with international universities.

He said the Punjab government would consider AIMC’s progress while preparing a draft legislation for the grant of university status by the Punjab Assembly.

The governor lauded the establishment of a new dialysis centre and provision of 10 new machines costing Rs15 million by the Sheikh Ijaz Ahmad Memorial Trust.

He said a modern burn unit was also established with the help of philanthropists.

He announced that the government would soon initiate a project of establishment of a liver transplantation centre at the AIMC/JH.

AIMC/JH board of management chairman Mian Mahboob Iqbal, principal Prof Syed Sibtul Hasnain and Sheikh Ijaz Ahmad Memorial Trust chairman Gohar Ijaz also spoke on the occasion.

Later, the governor visited different wards of the hospital and asked questions about the provision of facilities from patients’ relatives.
