Strike, demonstrations in Sindh towns; Protest against blasphemous cartoons

HYDERABAD, March 3: A complete strike was observed in all district headquarters and major towns of Sindh on Friday on the call of the MMA and the ARD in protest against publication of blasphemous cartoons in European newspapers.

In Hyderabad, total strike was observed in all four talukas of the district.

Main business centres, small grocery shops and petrol pumps remained closed.

The transport remained off the roads and the entire city gave a deserted look except for a few motorcycles and private cars.

Educational institutions remained closed and attendance in government offices was thin.

A complete strike was observed in Jamshoro, Matiari, Tando Mohammad Khan and Tando Allahyar districts.

SUKKUR: A complete strike was observed in Sukkur, Rohri, Pano Akil, Salehpat, Ghotki, Daharki and Ubauro.

In Sukkur, a rally was held by activists of the MMA.

The protesters started marching from Moti Mosque and reached Clock Tower.

The leaders demanded that the government should sever diplomatic and trade relations with Denmark and other European countries.

The speakers appealed to people to boycott European companies and products.

In Ghotki, a complete strike was observed and a procession was taken out under the auspicious of the MMA.

LARKANA: A complete strike was observed in Larkana and Qambar-Shahdadkot districts.

In Larkana, activists of different religious parties took out a procession that converged at the Pakistan chowk.

Lawyers of the city also took out a procession from the high court and district bar.

Razzak Soomro, Nawaz Chandio and Ayaz Soomro led the protesters.

In Qambar, a complete strike was observed.

THATTA: The strike call of opposition parties was highly responded throughout the district and bazars, business centres, small vendors and shops remained closed.

Processions were taken out in Thatta, Sujawal, Mirpur Bathoro, Chauhar Jamali and Jati.

SANGHAR: Vegetable, fruits market, Liaquat market, Sarafa bazar, M.A. Jinnah road and Saeed market remained closed in the city.

A majority of buses, wagons and other public transport remained off the road.

A procession was taken out which reached the local press club after marching on the main roads.

The participants burnt effigy of the US president.

JACOBABAD: A complete strike was observed in the city.

Traffic remained suspended.

Activists of the MMA, PPP, JI, JUI, PML-N and the PPP-SB took out a protest procession.

The participants blocked the road by staging a sit-in causing suspension of vehicular traffic for about one hour.

A procession was also taken out by the lawyers against the publication of blasphemous cartoons.

In Kandhkot, a big procession was taken out against the blasphemous cartoons.

A strike was also observed in Tangwani, Bakhshapur, Karampur, Thul and Garhi Khairo.

NAWABSHAH: Main markets in Nawabshah, Sakrand, Qazi Ahmed, Daur and Bandhi remained closed.

Police arrested four activists of the Ahl-i-Sunnat Wal Jamat. Later, they were released.

Various rallies were held in different parts of the district.

KHAIRPUR: Main markets of the city remained closed.

Towns of the district including Ranipur, Priyaloi, Therhi and Gambat also remained closed.

Transport in the city and to other towns remained suspended.

NAUSHAHRO FEROZE: A strike was observed in all towns of the district except Bhirya town.

Members of the MMA, ARD, JUI-F, PPP, Jamaat-i-Islami, PML-N, JSQM and Sindhi Adabi Sangat took out aprocession in Naushahro Feroze. Protest rallies were held in Moro, Kandiaro, Mithiani, Mehrabpur, Bhirya Road and Tharushah.

MITHI: A procession was taken out in Mithi by activists of the Jamaat-i-Islami, Awami Tehrik, PPP, STPP and the JUI.

Speaking on the occasion, Mahesh Kumar Malani, Subhan Samejo, Arif Junejo, Gulzar Otho, Ghani Bajir and Anwar Soomro condemned the publication of blasphemous cartoons.

A shutter-down strike was also observed in Chhachhro and Diplo and protest rallies were taken out.

SHIKARPUR: A complete strike was observed in Shikarpur, Garhi Yasin, Lakhi, Khanpur, Hamayoon, Mian Jo Goth, Chak Madeji, Dakhan and other parts of the district against the blasphemous cartoons.

Rallies were taken out in various parts of the district.

MIRPURKHAS: Markets, shopping and business centres as well as transport remained closed in Mirpurkhas.

A rally was taken out by the MMA.

A complete strike was observed in Umerkot, Mirwah, Digri, Tando Jan Mohammad, Jhuddo, Naukot, Kot Ghulam Mohammad, Samaro, Kunri, Pithoro and Shadi Palli towns.

BADIN: All shops and business centres in Matli, Talhar, Tando Bago, Golarchi, Badin, Khoski, Khorwah and Nindo Shehar remained closed.

DADU: A complete strike was observed in Dadu, Johi, Mehar, Thrari Mohabbat, Radhan, Bhan Syedabad and Sehwan.
