RAWALPINDI, Feb 24: In order to meet the seasonal water shortage in the district, officials of the provincial government have instructed the authorities concerned to prepare and submit a feasibility report on construction of three proposed mini-dams near Rawalpindi.

Construction of mini-dams namely Chirah Dam, Rocha Dam and Misriot Dam is aimed at ensuring regular water supply to Rawalpindi during seasonal shortfalls.

The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) consultants have been assigned the job to prepare the feasibility report and submit it as soon as possible. The provincial government on the basis of this assessment feasibility report would then approve and allocate the amount for the projects.

SOHAWA: Sohawa tehsil is facing acute water shortage and the residents have to cover a long distance to fetch water to meet their daily needs.

The residents told this agency that about Rs20 million had so far been spent on Sohawa water supply scheme, but they were still facing water shortage. They said the underground water storage and wells had dried up adding to their sufferings.

The residents said they had to purchase water at high prices to fulfil their needs. The social circle of the area have appealed to the highups to construct a small dam in Sohawa tehsil so that the problem could be resolved.

FATEHJANG: The residents of Fatehjang have expressed concern over the supply of contaminated water to the city due to which most of the people are suffering from hepatitis B and C. Women and children are the most affected.

The residents said they were being supplied water from Shahpur Dam but the water was not filtered. Contaminated water from the adjacent village area mixes with the supply line.

They said despite lodging several complaints, the authorities had so far taken no action in this regard. They said the provincial government had already released funds for provision of clean drinking water to the citizens.

The residents appealed to the health ministry to provide free vaccine to the patients suffering from hepatitis B and C.

They also demanded of the Punjab government to take serious action against the authorities concerned and issue directives to install water filtration plants as soon as possible.—PPI
