Polo: 3-goal Hissam fires Bankers into final

By Our Sports Correspondent

LAHORE, Feb 3: Three-goal Hissam Ali Hyder propelled Bank Alfalah into the final of Sahir Polo Cup beating Hico Icecream 6- 5 1/2 on Friday.

The winners made a stormy start taking 4-2 1/2 lead in the first chukker.

Hissam scored back-to-back goals while Jota Chavanne also added two more. Ahmed Ali Tiwana, struck a goal for the losers, who had 1 1/2 handicap goal.

The bankers increased their lead to 5- 2 1/2 as Saqib Khan Khakwani struck one goal of the second chukker off a fine pass from Hissam.

The winners maintained the lead 6-4 1/2 as Hissam pumped in his third goal, converting a 60-yard penalty hit with a lofted shot.

But three-goal Vishal Singh, who had missed a 30-yard penalty in the second chukker, reduced the margin scoring back-to-back goals, cashing in on 40-yard penalty hits with lofted shots.

Vishal brought the losers on the brink of a certain win in the fourth chukker but missed the opportunity.

He scored his third goal through a spot penalty to reduce the margin to only half a goal, but minutes later he missed a 60-yard penalty hit to deprive his team of the match winner.

Two handicap goals and a decider by Qaisar Trimzi in the extra chukker helped Colony Textile to win the subsidiary final beating Suzuki Township Motors 6-5.

After a barren first chukker, the winners came out with 3-1 lead in the second chukker as both teams scored a goal each.

Taimur Mawaz struck for the losers while Umar Sadik found the target for the winners.

The losers reduced the lead to 4-3 in the third chukker.

Taimur struck his second and when Sattar Niazi fired a goal it was 3-3.

But Naveed M Sheikh came to rescue the winners, scoring a field goal on solo efforts for 4-3 lead.

But the losers did not give up and eventually levelled the score 5-5 till the end of the fourth chukker to play the extra chukker.

Umar increased the lead for the winners (5-3) but Sattar and Mir Shoaib Ahmed scored a goal each in quick succession to make it 5-all, before Qaiser scored a field goal off a Naveed’s pass in the fifth chukker to clinch victory for his side.
