Big guns for classic

PERTH, Jan 10: American Fred Couples and Argentina’s Angel Cabrera were Tuesday confirmed as starters in next month’s Classic at the Vines Resort here, organisers said.

They will also be joined at the Feb 9-12 event by Robert Allenby, who last month won Australian golfs version of the Triple Crown.

In three straight weeks spanning late November and early December, the 34-year-old Australian won the Australian Open, the Australian PGA Championship and the Australian Masters — an unprecedented feat in Australian golf.

Couples, a former US Masters champion and 1995 Johnnie Walker Classic winner, has won 20 titles worldwide during his career including 15 on the US PGA Tour.

He overcame some long-running back problems in 2003 and won the Houston Open — his first win in five years.

Couples won the 1992 US Masters and has finished in the top-10 at Augusta on nine occasions and last year tied for third at the British Open at St Andrews behind Tiger Woods and Colin Montgomerie.—AFP
