DHAKA, Dec 14: The law enforcers on Tuesday arrested Ataur Rahman Sunny, top military commander of the banned Islamist organization Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh. Sunny, brother of the supreme commander and spiritual leader of the organization, Shaikh Abdur Rahman, was arrested from a hall of residence at the Dhaka Polytechnic Institute at Tejgaon. The official announcement of his arrest was made on Wednesday.

A team of the Rapid Action Battelion intelligence undertook the operation. “My name is Ataur Rahman Sunny and I am the younger brother of Shaikh Abdur Rahman,” said Sunny as he was produced before journalists for a few minutes at the Rapid Action Battalion’s headquarters on Wednesday afternoon. Sunny is a member of majlish-i-shura, the highest policymaking body of the Islamist organization, and is believed to have coordinated the recent suicide bombings.
