LAHORE, Dec 14: PPP(SB) leader Dr Mubashar Hasan has opposed construction of Kalabagh dam until a consensus among people and leaders of all the provinces is evolved on the issue.

“We are far from reaching any consensus at the moment. The situation is highly explosive and has the potential of far reaching consequences,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.

The question was as grave as of the Six Point Formula presented by Sheikh Mujibur Rehman of Awami League in 1966 when Islamabad misjudged the unanimous political demands of East Pakistanis as a desire to run the national economy, he said.

“Once again we are misjudging the political nature of the opposition to the Kalabagh dam as it does not at the moment relate to water or the engineering design of the dam. So the reports of technical or economic experts are of little value.”

No attempt should be made to build the dam at Kalabagh or anywhere else through the use of state’s coercive power, he suggested.
