Unruly crowd gives India win

Published December 14, 2005

SIALKOT, Dec 13: India were declared winners of the third volleyball match against Pakistan at Sharkargarh Stadium, Narowal on Tuesday. The match was stopped after two sets due to crowd misconduct. Indians had won both the sets.

The spectators, reportedly numbering more than the available seats, got infuriated over the mismanagement and started hurling broken chairs and stones at the police, some of which also hit Pakistani and Indian players.

The situation forced the organizers to stop play at 3:00 pm when the teams were playing third set and escorted the players out of the ground. The police, then, baton charged the frenzied crowd and brought the situation under control after an hour long skirmish.—BoC
