Coordinated efforts urged to face crises : Law & order satisfactory: PM

KARACHI, Dec 3: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Saturday stressed the need for setting up a coordinated disaster management system in Sindh, involving police, civil society and civil defence department.

He was presiding over a high-level meeting on the law and order situation in the province and land availability and real estate development in the city.

He expressed satisfaction with the improvement in the law and order situation and ‘resilience shown by the people’ but also called upon police to take steps for controlling crimes such as car and mobile phone snatching.

He said there was no room for complacency and promised that more manpower would be provided to police for improving its effectiveness.

He called upon law enforcement agencies to remain vigilant against elements who were trying to disrupt peace in the province.

Mr Aziz also called for improving traffic system, particularly in the metropolitan areas, and assured police of government support for improving its mobility.

The Sindh governor and chief minister, federal minister for ports and shipping and senior officials were present in the meeting.

In another meeting at the State Guest House, Mr Aziz reviewed availability of land and real estate development in Karachi.

He also took stock of several laws and said that due to lack of coordination among various departments, problems were being faced.

According to sources, the issue of ownership of reclaimed land in Mai Kolachi, Sea View and Sultanabad, which had been a bone of contention between the Karachi Port Trust and the Sindh government, was the main point of discussion in the meeting.

According to an official source, the prime minister directed the city nazim and DCO to evolve transparent procedures for construction of hotels, shopping malls and apartments.

He also directed builders to strictly follow building codes, making them earthquake proof.

In the evening, a delegation of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement called on the prime minister and discussed with him matters regarding the coalition government, law and order situation and water reservoirs.

Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad, Chief Minister Dr Arbab Rahim and other officials were also present.

Mr Aziz emphasized the need for coordination between the provincial and federal governments and said it was critical to accelerate industrial, agricultural and economic development of the province.
