VALLETTA, Nov 26: Nigeria’s President Olusegun Obasango on Saturday launched a bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Abuja, and asked that the two other contenders withdraw their bids so that the event could be held in Africa for the first time.

Obasango announced Abuja’s bid to host the games, second only to the Olympics in size, at an informal function on the margins of the 53-nation Commonwealth dedicated to sport.

“We all want to see the Games hosted in Africa for the first time. For the year 2014, Nigeria is putting up a bid,” he said.
