Domestic violence under probe in S. Arabia

By Syed Rashid Husain

RIYADH: About 500 cases of family violence are currently under investigation in Saudi Arabia, indicating a growing awareness of the curse in Saudi society. However, analysts feel, the number represents just the tip of the iceberg.

Construction of a separate hostel for women exposed to family violence is also under consideration.

According to a study conducted by Prof Salwa al Khateeb of King Saud University, some 90 per cent of Saudi women had seen their mothers being abused, highlighting the magnitude of the evil.

Although education has brought about a gradual change in Saudi tribal attitudes, analysts feel the problem is still there. The above figures are amazing and alarming.

Prof Salwa al Khateeb’s study is the first to be conducted on domestic violence. The study was undertaken after the saga of a TV presenter shocked Saudis. Rania al Baz was assaulted by her husband and left outside a hospital for dead last year.

The case of Ms Rania, whose husband was sentenced to six months in prison and 300 lashes, prompted the research by Prof Salwa al Khateeb.

Dr Suhaila Zain al Abdeen, a member of the Family and Child Committee at the Human Rights Association, called for a review of existing laws.

The Saudi Human Rights Association, formed under official patronage, is also in the process of releasing its report on the human rights situation. It will also prepare recommendation on incriminating acts of family violence.
