ISLAMABAD, Nov 3: Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) will set up a separate orphans and widows tent village at Chakoti sector besides rehabilitation of the affected population of the area.
This was stated by the PRCS chairman Lt-Gen (retd) Jehan Dad Khan during a meeting with the visiting President of the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) Kellenberger and his delegation.
The meeting discussed different aspect of the ongoing relief operation and the future strategies of the PRCS to the earthquake areas.
Gen Khan said Pakistan Red Crescent Society had completed the need assessments in the Chakoti sector and was finalizing the rehabilitation plan aiming at meeting the shelter and food requirements of the people of the area as well as provision of construction material for the damaged houses, colleges and hospitals.
He said that the Red Crescent was in the process of building of stocks at Muzaffarabad and Gari Duppata from where they will be shifted to Chakoti once the roads opened.
“Red Crescent is engaged in the largest relief operation since its inspection and I am sure that it will stay successful in mitigating the suffering of the victims,” said Mr Khan.
Giving details fo the Red Crescent relief operations to the ICRC president and delegates, the PRCS chairman said that so far they have dispatched a total of 463 trucks of relief items including 17,731 blankets, provided medical services to 14,758 beneficiaries, collected 1,756 blood units and raised over Rs40 million through foreign and domestic donations.
The Society has also received 400 tons of donations in kind and medicines, he added. Gen Khan told the mediamen that a Red Crescent Hospital was set up at Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital to care the medical needs of the earthquakes victims. He said a team of eminent UK based Pakistani surgeons is providing medical treatment to the critically injured of the quake victims. He said that so far more than 250 critical cases were treated and the Red Crescent will also provide artificial limbs to the affected children.
The president ICRC Mr Jacob Kellenberger lauded the efforts of the Pakistan Red Crescent Society in the post quake operations. He assured his fullest possible help to the PRCS in its relief efforts to the earthquake victims.
