KARACHI: Hiring of 7,500 women teachers in final stage: Sindh Assembly informed

KARACHI, Oct 20: The Sindh Assembly was on Thursday informed that the provincial government was trying to fill the big gap in the education system by recruiting 7,500 women teachers for girls community model schools in Sindh in a month.
Education Minister Dr Hamida Khuhro also told the house during question hour that 737 posts of the lecturers in various government colleges in Karachi were lying vacant, beside 2,063 posts of high school teachers in the government schools of Karachi. The number of vacant post for primary school teachers in the city was 1,041, she added.
The minister said that approval by the competent authority was awaited for the recruitment of the 7,500 women teachers. Applications had been invited in May 2003 and test of some 40,000 applicants held through CBM in November 2003. About 20,000 candidates had qualified for the posts and were called for an interview in May 2004. She said that a summary for appointment of successful candidates had been submitted and an approval by the competent authority was expected soon.
Dr Khuhro maintained that recruitment in her department could not be made because of a ban which remained in place for almost 10 years. “The credit goes to the present government which lifted the ban.”
With regard to 737 vacant posts of lecturers in colleges of Karachi, she said that posting was in progress after lifting of the ban on transfers and postings on account of the recent local bodies election.
All these posts were sent to the Sindh Public Service Commission for regular appointments. However, appointments on ad hoc basis against these posts in pursuance of the Sindh High Court’s decision had also been made till the recommendations of the SPSC were made available.
For the 2,063 vacant posts of HSTs, she said that tests and interviews of candidates had been conducted and the successful ones would be appointed shortly after approval by the competent authority.
About recruitment of primary school teachers, she told the house that the process had almost been finalized and an approval from the competent authority was awaited.
The house was informed that a college building constructed 10 years back at a cost of Rs6 million in Ghora Bari, Thatta district, had not yet been handed over to the education departments. As such, it was without any enrolment. The building required some repairs. She told the questioner that a girls primary school was functioning in a portion of the building with some 350 enrolments.
Dr Hamida Khuhro assured the house that the works department would be asked to complete the repair work as early as possible.
