KARACHI: E. coli found in 29 more water samples

KARACHI, Oct 3: The Health Regulation and Quality Control Department of the city government on Monday announced that E. coli bacteria had been found in yet 29 more water samples.

A team of food inspectors had collected 50 water samples from various areas of the city including J Area Korangi, Aligarh Colony, Sher Shah, Liaquatabad, New Karachi and Eidgah areas on Sept 27, and had sent them to the laboratory of the city government for examination.

According to the lab report, as many as 29 samples collected out of the 50 samples from J Area Korangi, Eidgah and Sher Shah were found contaminated with E. coli bacteria.

It is worrying to note that the city government laboratory had previously conducted tests on 213 water samples and as many as 134 of them were found contaminated with E. coli.

With Monday’s results, 163 water samples out of 263 samples tested yet have been found contaminated with E. coli bacteria; that’s 62 per cent of the total water samples tested. The results have been communicated to KWSB.—PPI
