Troops move into Shawal; seven held

By Our Correspondent

MIRAMSHAH (North Waziristan), Sept 10: Regular troops moved into the mountainous Shawal region in the North Waziristan Agency on Saturday to search for militants and bust their hideouts.

The troops backed up by helicopters moved into the region that borders Afghanistan at the crack of light to conduct search for foreign as well as local militants, security and military officials said.

An official said the troops met some resistance but gave no figure for any casualties from either side.

“There have been engagements here and there,” the official said, requesting anonymity.

He said that seven people had been rounded up in the operation that concluded in the evening and among those were two most wanted men.

Zarim Khan and Mir Aslam, an expert in improvised explosive devices, were captured and were later flown in a helicopter to an undisclosed location.

Four others were captured while attempting to plant an explosive device, the official said. One other suspect was captured elsewhere.
