By Our Correspondent

GUJRANWALA, Sept 3: The Alliance for Restoration of Democracy (ARD) nominated its candidates for seats of the district nazim and town nazims in Gujranwala here on Saturday.

The decision was taken in a meeting held at the residence of Punjab PML-N chief organizer Ghulam Dastagir Khan which was also presided by him, while the PPP and the PML-N’s important leadership was also present on the occasion.

According to the announcement, former MNA and PPP district president Chaudhry Abdullah Virk was nominated the candidate for the district nazim, Chaudhry Muhammad Tariq for Nandipur Town, Rao Farman Ali for Aroop Town, former district naib nazim Gohar Zaman Chaudhry for Qila Dedar Singh Town nazim.

Mr Dastagir said the candidate for Khiali Town would be nominated later. PML-N’s district president Abdullah Virk will decide the nomination of town nazim aspirant for Wazirabad while Chaudhry Abdullah Virk the nomination of town nazim for Kamoki.

SUMMONED: The National Assembly’s standing committee for interior on Saturday summoned Gujranwala DPO Dr Mushtaq Arif and Investigation SP Muhammad Fiaz on Sept 6 in Islamabad to explain the registration of a cross case against a cousin and other relatives of a committee member at Aroop Town.

Aroop SHO Inspector Saif Ullah Virk and Investigation Inspector Muhammad Munir were suspended from service by police authorities on charge of registering the cross version without proper investigation and were issued show-cause notices.

Minister for law, justice and human rights and committee member Chaudhry Shahid Akram Bhinder had complained to the committee that his political rivals got registered a cross version against 40 people, including his cousin, Aroop union council nazim-elect Naveed Anwer Bhinder, who is also son of Senator Chaudhry Muhammad Anwer Bhinder, and his other relatives over an election row.

Reports said the ruling PML-backed Bhinder group had got registered a case against 35 people of its rival Farid Awan group, which is jointly supported by PPP and PML-N, over an election row on polling day.

The cross case was registered after a week of registration of the case. Mr Bhinder has accused the DPO and Investigation SP of registering the cross version, allegedly without investigating into the matter.

CANDIDATE: Chaudhry Zafar Gulzar, cousin of provincial transport minister Rana Shamshad Ahmad Khan, has also come forward as candidate for the Kamoki town nazim seat.

During a news conference here on Saturday, he said the provincial minister should support him instead of his brother as promised by him during the last local body elections.

He said the provincial minister had his brother Rana Sajjad Ahmad nominated for the coveted spot after breaking his promise.

He claimed that the opposition and members of various union councils were favouring him for the town nazim election.

REMANDED: The local Anti-Terrorism Court No 1 on Saturday granted a three-day physical remand against a union council councillor for his alleged involvement in manhandling a returning officer on the polling day on Aug 18.

Reports said that accused councillor Asghar Ali had allegedly attacked and injured RO Taseer Ahmad and also set his official vehicle on fire.

Police had arrested him on Aug 19 and registered a case against him under the ATC act.
